AFC Uckfield 3 Steyning Town 0
Town started their 2020/21 League campaign on Saturday with a very disappointing 3-0 defeat away to AFC Uckfield.
However, despite the result, after the on going uncertainty of recent months it was certainly pleasing to see a decent sized crowd in attendance and a return to some kind of normality.
On a sunny afternoon we arrived at The Oaks with our tails up after our impressive midweek 2-0 FA Cup win at K-Sports and hopeful of something similar to start the League season.
But despite periods of pressure where if our finishing had been better we may ended the day with something to show, the home side were always the more dominant and after finding ourselves 2-0 down after half an hour we never really looked like seriously getting back into the match.
Throughout, we were also very unlucky with some referring decisions but never the less…
Goals from Uckers Morgan Vale and Dan Perry on 7 and 28 minutes meant we went in two goals down at the break and if it hadn’t been for two excellent point blank saves by new keeper Sam Marsden the deficit would have been greater.
For us Ben Spano battled hard and ran strongly from the back.
Chances came our way with Louis Coulson putting the best one over the top at close range and Harry Heath also going close a couple of times, but it wasn’t our day with us lacking a little in the final third and wasteful.
With a quarter of an hour remaining we conceded a penalty for a foul which Perry coolly tucked away to put the game out of our reach.
Just to round things off for us, in the dying minutes Coulson was dismissed rather harshly for a foul on their keeper.
Not the best day, but hopefully we will bounce back on Tuesday night at home to Saltdean (KO at Birchwood Shooting Field 7:45pm).
