Eastbourne United 1 – 1 STCFC

Town’s trip to Eastbourne United on Saturday ended in disappointment when an injury-time equalizer by the home team denied us all 3 points in a hard-fought contest against a side just below us in the table.

After 2 Cup exits in 11 days and the previous Saturday’s fixture at Uckfield called off due to the weather we headed to East Sussex looking to get our form back on track.

There was also a debut in central defence for new signing Matt Boiling.

So, on a cold and damp afternoon at the Oval we started the much stronger side with Andrade and Sabino looking sharp at front.

We pretty much bossed the entire first half with the home side creating very little and it came as no surprise when on the half-hour we took the lead.

A neat thru pass from Scott Faber released Matt Hards who moved into their box to slot the ball wide of United keeper Hawkins to find the bottom left corner for 1-0.

The home crowd became frustrated with their side and bayed for Sabino to be dismissed for ‘ stamping ‘ on one of their prostate players when he merely caught him when stepping over him!

Half time – United 0 Town 1

After a half time rollicking the hosts came out a different side in the 2nd half and came at us attacking hard down the flanks with JJ called into action several times and stout defending required to keep them out.

It looked like Lady Luck was with us though when United skipper Paul Rogers was red-carded for dissent after being sin-binned for a foul but Eastbourne kept their momentum and compensated well and in injury time got their reward.

A superb 20-yard strike by Kane Penn gave JJ no chance as it flew into our net to level the score.

We rallied very late with sub Charlie Romain going close but on balance, a draw was probably a fair result.

However, despite the disappointment a good point on a hard ground and 8 games on the trot unbeaten in the League now.

Next up – next Saturday East Sussex opposition again this time at HOME to Langney Wanderers (KO at Birchwood Shooting Field 3pm)
