Wembley dream still alive for Town.

The FA Vase was the focus on Saturday for Town with the visit of Lingfield to the Birchwood ground. After Tuesday’s late agony in the Sussex senior cup, Murphy made four changes with Clark, Gathern, Faber and Cousins all returning  to the starting line up. The visitors started quickly with the no.11 looking the most dangerous threat to Town with his pace and what with the home teams seemingly nervousness meant that the early exchanges were more in favour of the away team. Although, as football is a funny old game and when, what we come to expect from a Murphy team is free flowing football,  a long punt up field from Marsden found Cousins who twisted the centre half inside out to slot home.

That goal seemed to push the visitors on and it was only 10 minutes later a deep cross found it’s way to an unmarked Lingfield player who duly smashed home the equaliser.

1-1 HT

As the second half started it was obvious that Town had the proverbial hairdryer treatment from Murphy as the boy’s looked a different team as they were quicker to the ball and were playing better football and on the 50th minute an in swinging corner from Bold found C Tilley free at the back post to stab home and regain the lead.

It was all Town then with chances for Cousins,  Tilley and Boiling all going close but on the 68th minute another corner was delivered perfectly from Bold to meet the “salmon-like” Boiling to crash a header into the roof of the net.

More chances came with Bloomfield, Tilley and Cousins calling the visitors keeper into action but it was a majestic 70 yard run from Boiling that was the highlight of the closing minutes when, after beating 3 players deep inside his own half he presided to sprint the length of the pitch only to run out of steam and smash the ball at the keeper rather than squaring for the unmarked Tilley.

All in all, a more comfortable win than the first 15 minutes evidence and now Town turn their attention to a tough league game away at Horley on Tuesday evening.
