Hassocks FC 1 Steyning Town 3
The Barrowmen survived some early scares before running out comfortable winners against Hassocks FC at the Beacon last night. In an eventful opening twenty minutes Hassocks missed a penalty, scored a goal and then unfortunately for them lost their main attacking threat and playmaker in Charlie Pitcher.
Once the opening goal had gone in for the hosts the Barrowmen got in to their rhythm and went on to dominate most of the remainder of the game. A number of first half chances went begging however Town were still 2-1 up at half time. The first goal came minutes after the Hassocks goal from a gloriously curled free kick from Bold after a rather soft free kick. The second a neat finish from a tight angle from Cian Tilley shortly before the break.
In the second half Town came out the traps quickly and sub Bloomfield, on for Tilley, did superbly well to win back possession, played in the lively Cousins who was chopped down for a stonewall penalty. Bold calmly dispatched the spot kick. This third goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of the hosts and Town went on to play some superb football and dominate the whole second half. Cousins, Bloomfield and Heath were causing havoc with their pace and directness and only some poor finishing and some cracking keeping kept the score down. Romain hit the post with a 25 yard drive and Maher fired over the bar on two occasions. At the other end Hassocks had one chance where a long range dipping volley drifted wide, and they had a late penalty shout waved away.
The other talking points of the second half were two dangerous tackles. One by Romain for Steyning resulting in a yellow, and one for Brown of Hassocks which ended in a straight red. Some locals were bemoaning a lack of consistency, and Romain may have been slightly fortunate to not receive further punishment, but the fact he actually managed to play the ball seemed the main difference between the two challenges.
Overall a cracking win at a lovely ground on a beautiful warm and still evening. The two late tackles aside the game was played in a good spirit and the Barrowmen were worthy winners. Hassocks will rue the early missed penalty , the loss of a key player, and some decisions not going their way, but cannot really have any complaints about the final score.
