STCFC 1 – 1 Newhaven FC
On Saturday, Town extended their unbeaten run to eleven matches in all competitions with a 1-1 draw at home to Newhaven
With our visitors just below us in the top half of the table this was always going to be a closely contested match, and so it proved to be.
As a spectacle, it was not a classic by any stretch.
The entire game was played in driving wind and rain which at times made the playing of fluid football difficult for both sides and here and there tempers flared.
Mostly in the first half, we seemed to struggle a little more than them and spent a lot of the half under the cosh with Dockers frontman Mo Diallo always a prominent threat. Just before the half-hour they were awarded a penalty for a foul. However, Diallo’s spot-kick was well saved by JJ, diving low to his left to palm the ball away.
Minutes later JJ was again our saviour, saving well with his feet ‘one-on-one’ again with Diallo.
Just before the break though we were caught cold when a deep cross from their right found Diallo at the far post whose looping header wrong-footed JJ to find the far side of the net to give them the lead.
Half time – Town 0 Newhaven 1
In the second half, we upped our game and showed more attacking flair. Sabino, Andrade and Radmore were all thwarted at close range by their keeper Jake Buss as we pressed to level the score.
We still had moments down our end however with some solid defending and good work from JJ again keeping them at bay.
In the dying minutes, a long ball upfield from Billy White found Andrade in their box who was brought down by Dockers defender Sowter and Town appealed for a penalty. As Sowter walked away he needlessly shoved Andrade in the face, obviously incensed by his appeals, and was deservedly red-carded and the ref then awarded a penalty even though the ball was long gone.
Thiago calmly stepped up to slot home the spot-kick and bag us a point and so maintain our position in 5th place in the table and, as said, make it eleven straight games undefeated.
On the day the clocks went back I think we all hope we are in a similar position when the clocks go forward again!
Next up – this Tuesday evening it’s Cup football again with a trip up to Loxwood in the SCFA RUR Cup (KO at Plaistow Road – 7.30pm) and next Saturday we have a local derby at home to Horsham YMCA (KO at Birchwood Stadium@Shooting Field – 3pm).
