Towns inconsistent start to the season continued on Saturday 26th September with a miserable 3-0 home defeat to Newhaven FC. From Towns perspective little went right all afternoon and the hosts were full value for their win and in fact if the winning margin was greater there could have been little complaint.
The visitors missed a number of good chances and in fact the three goals they did score all came from defensive howlers. In the first half an under hit back pass by Boling, who has had a very good season so far, was picked up by Robinson and he rounded Theobald in the Steyning goal and calmly rolled home. Early in the second half another mistake, this time from Gathern, was again pounced upon and Robinson gleefully rolled home again. And to complete the hattrick of howlers Jeffery rolled home late on from 30 yards after a poor defensive clearance from keeper Theobald fell straight to his feet.
Town did have the odd good moment in the afternoon. Cousins clipped the bar in the second half, and created a few half chances, however keeper Buss in the dockers goal was rarely troubled. The introduction of Healy up top added some much needed extra energy in the final third as Town did look more dangerous in the last twenty minutes, but by then the game had gone.
Town looked like they sorely missed the energy in he middle of the park given by missing both Heath and Spano, two of our best performers this season, and will surely be desperate to bounce back on Tuesday night to prove this was a day to forget.
