Steyning Town FC 1 Walton & Hersham FC 6

Pagham FC 4 Steyning Town Fc 1

Steyning Town returned to action this week after the second lock down and after being on the end of two comprehensive defeats and rusty performances they may have been left wishing the lockdown had been extended.

First of all on Saturday they were at home to much fancied Walton & Hersham FC in the FA Vase. Things could not have got off to a worse start as they conceded a soft handball penalty within minutes from the kick off and things went from bad to worse as the visitors seemed to score every time they attacked. Steyning certainly had plenty of possession, but struggled to create chances as Walton soaked up the pressure and continued to cause damage on the counter attack. Town found themselves 5-0 down at half time after some excellent & clinical finishing. The second half as you imagine was a subdued affair and a further goal for the visitors was cancelled out by a Bold penalty. All in all a disappointing afternoon but no shame in losing to a good side. One further sour note for the afternoon was the sad sight of a fractured ankle later on for one of Walton & Hershams players as the result of a mistimed sliding tackle from Tony Timms. We have been in touch with the club and have passed on our best wishes and support to the player. Best wishes to Walton & Hersham in the next round.

Fast forward a few days and Town were in action again on Tuesday evening, this time in action away to Pagham FC on a very cold and misty evening at Nyetimber Lane. It was great to see Ryan Timms back in the starting elven after last years health problems, and Scott Murphy also returned to the side as he is cup tied in the FA Vase. However irrespective of the changes in personnel we yet again got off to a very poor start and found ourselves two down inside ten minutes courtesy of two excellent goals; one a thumping strike from the angle of the box and the second and excellent solo effort. Once we had woken up, we started to get a foothold in the game and found our way right back in to it as Timms marked his return with a low strike in to the bottom of the net following a corner. After our goal we enjoyed a really good spell for the remainder of the first half and the early part of the second half, but could not find the equaliser. As the game wore on we seemed to tire and Pagham got themselves back on top. Rance scored his second of the night through a penalty with 15 minutes to go and then completed his hattrick in the final minute to give the hosts a comprehensive 4-1 scoreline. Time for Town to dust down and get back on track, as we travel to Peacehaven this Saturday.
