Saltdean United 5 Steyning Town 2
After a two week break Town returned to action on Saturday with a trip over to high flying Saltdean United, but unfortunately ended up on the wrong end of a 5-2 scoreline. On a bright and sunny but very chilly afternoon, and not the greatest pitch conditions, we started with the wind at our backs.
We showed early promise with strong, incisive running from Rob Clark and Josh Bradley and after soaking up some pressure from the home side, on 28 minutes a superb 30 yard strike from Cien Tilley flew into the back of the Tigers net to give us the lead.
Our joy was short lived though and quite frustratingly at that point we seemed to self destruct and let our hosts well and truly back into the match. Two goals in two minutes and another shortly after, aided by some sloppy defending on our part, meant we went in at the break trailing 3-1 having quickly unravelled from such a strong start.
Half time – Saltdean 3 Town 1
With the temperature dropping the second half was pretty much all one way traffic with us constantly stretched at the back. Two more goals for the Tigers mid way through the half completely put the game beyond us. However, with about 15 minutes left another decent strike from Tilley restored a bit of pride and indeed made the scoreline a little less bad. Not the greatest day at the office especially after such a bright start and we must learn from our mistakes and regroup.
Next up – next Saturday another stern test with a trip over to second placed Newhaven (KO @ Fort Rd 3pm)
Final score – Saltdean United 5 Steyning Town 2
Town line up – Ayling, Clark, Sabino, Brown (Kiabelanga) Younger, Okolo, Bennett (Adstrade) , Murphy (c) , Tilley, Bradley (Harvey- Rogerson) Howell Unused subs – Romain, Fitzpatrick
