Towns poor runs of results over Christmas continued on Saturday with a 2-1 home defeat to Billingshurst FC.
Over the whole 90 minutes Town could have argued they maybe deserved to get something out of the game. However credit must go to the visitors who came with a solid game plan , soaked up pressure well and pounced on two mistakes by the home side, to score two well taken goals by Nick Tilley.
During the second half Towse and the hard working Al-Samairie missed gilt edged opportunities to get Town back in the game. Towse skewed a volley wide from 5 yards out and Al-Samairie flashed a point blank header wide when it seemed easier to score. however Billingshurst themselves had a couple of good chances, one forcing a goal line clearance from Levoi and one where Ford was lucky to escape red after hauling down the striker racing through.
Steynings efforts over the afternoon were rewarded only with a late consolation goal by Rob Clark, volleying home from close range after good work from Al-Samairie. This did spark a late flurry of pressure , but it was too little too late.
This defeat left Murphys team sitting 9th in the table and facing a long final third of the season, with a top six finish and an FA place next season now their main focus.
The Christmas season has been disappointing with a return of 2 points from 3 games, with all 3 games against teams from the lower end of the table.
The squad has been stretched, injuries and unavailibility has taken its toll, however the task now is to re-energise and re-focus the squad to finish the season strongly and still hunt down a top six finish for the second consecutive season.
Well played to Billingshurst and good luck for the remainder of the season.
Next up is Selsey away on Saturday.
