Steyning Town 5 Eastbourne United 0

On Saturday afternoon the Barrowmen turned in their best performance of the season so far with a 5-0 demolition of Eastbourne United at the Birchwood@Shootingfield.

We came into the match on the back of Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Horley, where we played well but were unlucky, and were looking to bounce back. With Eastbourne having also not started their League campaign terribly well, the points were well and truly up for grabs.

Under an overcast sky we started the match high tempo, immediately taking the game to our visitors with plenty of energy and strong running, Josh McGrath and Scott Murphy both going close with good attempts early on.

On 20 minutes our pressure was rewarded, all be it from the penalty spot after George Cousins was fouled in their box. Tom Bold coolly stepped up to send their keeper the wrong way for 1-0. Minutes later a Bold free kick cannoned back off the United cross bar with Cian Tilley following up to drive the ball home to make it two.

Eastbourne were lack lustre and created very little, at times becoming visibly frustrated at times as we kept up our momentum.

Minutes before the break Seamus Tilley broke down the left to deliver a wonder cross for Cousins to finish neatly, volleying wide of their keeper, to increase the advantage.

Half time – Town 3 United 0

We started the 2nd half in the same vain, keeping up the tempo and not looking to sit back. A neat through ball sent Cousins racing into their box to draw the keeper before laying off for Bold to tap in for his second and our fourth. It was then Cousins turn to grab a brace, firing a great shot into the top left corner for five. We could have added more as we continued to  press and create chances, sub Toby Bloomfield drilling a great effort just wide of left.

Yes a fantastic, gilt edged performance and three welcome points which should really give us a boost going forward. Well done one and all.

Next up – On Tuesday we make the short trip down to East Preston (KO @ the Lashmar 7.30pm)
