Steyning Town Community FC are delighted to announce their U23 management and coaching set up. Hot on the heels of announcing Kev Green as our new first team manager we are absolutely thrilled that ex club captain Alex Gathern has taken up the role as U23s manager. His team also need no introduction with ex player Mike Spence tasking up the role of Assistant manager and Head Coach, and they will also be assisted by U18 manager George Staples and Grant ‘Barlow’ Ansbro.
The club are thrilled to have Alex on board as manager after his enforced playing retirement last year and see this as a young , talented and ambitious coaching set up who know the club well.
Alex said of his appointment “I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to manage the U23’s team. The U23’s team is an important factor in providing younger players a chance to continue to develop their playing career, and ensuring the men’s first team is able to excel. The U23’s team will be run as professionally as the men’s first team and the two teams will be closely linked, with plenty of overlapping. A successful U23’s team will only lead to a more successful men’s first team.
As well as working closely with the men’s first team we will also be closely linked to the U18 management structure. Although myself, Mike and Barlow will be watching U16’s/U18’s training and/or games throughout the season, having George as part of the U23 management structure will help provide a level of continuity between the U18’s and U23’s. Every player involved at U18 level should therefore see first hand that there is a clear pathway to the first team, and part of my role is to provide them with every opportunity to do so.
I’m also pleased that Mike Spence has agreed to join the U23’s management team. Mike’s a well qualified coach and has been involved in developing younger players at the club in the recent years. Mike and I will be working closely with the men’s first team manager to ensure training sessions meet the high level of standards that will be expected.
As well as Mike and George, I’m also pleased that Grant “Barlow” Ansbro has agreed to join the U23’s management team. Barlow’s been involved at the club for many years now, and will bring with him a lot of enthusiasm to go with his experience.”
Initial plans for trial dates and pre-season games for the U23’s team will finalised shortly. Further information will be released on social media soon.
