It’s FA Cup weekend and Steyning Town’s men’s first team are in Preliminary Round action this weekend as the March to the Arch continues.
Gerry Murphy’s men edged past Pagham, 3-2 after a replay, in the first knockout tie of this season’s competition and now face Sutton Common Rovers of the Isthmian League (South Central) in the Preliminary Round on Saturday (August 21).
Sutton are playing their first match of the 2021-22 tournament with a place in the First Qualifying Round – and £1,444 at stake (losing clubs will pick up £481). Both Steyning and SCR reached that stage twelve months ago before going down to Sheppey United and Metropolitan Police respectively.
Steyning’s all time best FA Cup run saw the Barrowmen reach the Second Qualifying round in 1989, with both clubs looking to progress to the next round for the second successive season. London based Sutton Common Rovers have never gone beyond the first round of qualifying.
Steyning suffered their first loss of the season with a heavy home loss to promotion favourites Littlehampton Town, so the return of the FA Cup provides an immediate opportunity to get back to winning ways.
3pm kick off at the Shooting Field on Saturday so come on down and support the lads. The draw for the First Qualifying Round will be made upon the culmination of the weekend’s ties.
